2003 Large Scale Project: Ehrensdorf Hill Improvement Page last updated 1-6-04
This project, which has been in planning stages since 1994, has recently been completed. The low bid was awarded to Lloyd Priebe and Sons Construction . The final overall cost of the project was only slightly more than the bid awarded. Thanks for this go out to the contractor for a job well done, along with sub contractors and Brosz Engineering, who did a first rate job for us. We provided and delivered the surface gravel to the project, helping keep cost at a minimum. The project was completed for less than 135,000. The preliminary estimate for this project as engineered was approximately 180,000. The road is now a much safer and more functional area and less of a winter hazard.

The Old Hill and its Problems
In this photo, taken prior to beginning construction, one can see the before picture of the site. The present roadway hits over 10% grade near the top, is narrow, has numerous blind spots, and slopes are steep and easy to slide off of. Numerous near miss type accidents have occured at this site, which is the only way to travel north-south in the County other than two state highways some distance east and west of the project. Also included is matching of the farm access road to the east and CMP drainage pipe to handle water drainage from the upslopes. |
Another Pre-Construction Photo
Another view of the same hill from a different angle. The basic purpose of the construction is to make a safer and more reliable roadway for access and travel. |

Getting Started On The Job
Lloyd Priebe and Sons, A construction firm from Pukwana South Dakota, is moving onsite with two TS24 scrapers and other equipment. Lloyd has virtually grown up in an earthmover and is one of the best contract construction firms available anywhere. We were fortunate to get many bids, and the competition was fierce. The Winning bid was approximately 60,000 less than the engineer's estimate of 180,000-187,000 using standard figures per specifications. We get an expert AND we get a great deal to boot. |
Beginning to Take Shape
Taken May 1, 2003. Construction halted by moderate moisture recieved. Sign at hilltop is barely visible.

May First at the site
A view from the top down as construction was halted by rainfall. The project is beginning to take a rough form already. |
The Finished Project June 9
This is the view from the south end looking north after the dirtwork and partial gravel surfacing were complete.

Looking Down on June 9
This is taken from the point where the old curve sign was located, looking down the finished project. The grade that was once a 10% climb is now a longer and flatter 6% rise. The crushed gravel surface should provide adequite traction in all weather and remain set for many years. |
