Machinery, Major Assets Of BCHD
Buffalo County Highway Department owns 2 Motor Graders with snow attachments, one Tandem Dump Truck with snow plow attachment, one Wheel Loader, one Spray Truck, one Utility Tractor with Mower and Retriever attachments, and two light trucks. These machines are the tools of our trade and are kept in top running condition at all times. Other assets listed are our buildings, properties and our highway system, as well as the County Courthouse, where all matters pertaining to highway matters can be formally discussed or debated with my Superiors, the Board Of Comissioners. |

2000 Champion/Volvo 736A All Wheel Drive Motor Grader
This machine is the largest piece of equipment we have. Variable horsepower up to 205 BHP and 6 wheel drive make it the go to machine when the job requires heavy duty. Seasonal snow attachments by Champion (heavy Duty high bench 14' wing) and Falls (v90 plow) it is the heavyweight in snow management.
|
1994 Caterpillar 140G Motor Grader
The 140G Motor Grader is one of the best built machines in the industry. The 185 variable horsepower and smaller stature make it the ultimate maintenance grader. More fuel efficient than the Volvo, this is the go to utility blade and the highest quality machine we own. With snow attachments by Falls (12' snow wing) and Balderson (narrow 60 degree v-plow) it is the perfect balance of weight, power and reliability.

Case W20C Wheel Loader
The all wheel drive Case Wheel Loader is a very versatile machine, used for installing culverts, small scale dirtwork, digging, gravel loading, material blending, moving and lifting numerous large objects and general construction as well as snow removal duties in Winter, this machine rarely rests. A 2.5 yd bucket and 130 BHP makes this an essential asset to our operation. |
John Deere 2955 Utility Tractor
This tractor sees use as a mowing tractor as well as Spring disk retriever to recover lost material on shoulders. The tractor was recently upgraded to a 359 turbocharged engine. Rated at 125 BHP, the improvement of nearly 40 HP over the stock engine makes this tractor twice the performer versus its stock form. It had a tough time mowing in heavy crop as stock, but now has ample power no matter what conditions it is in. The attachments, a Tiger Corp belly mounted hydraulic rotary mower and Short Fabric (modified) retriever make it even more versatile and valuable to our operation. The mower was recently rebuilt and the retriever converted to hitch 3 point mounting, and both tools are essential to our continuing successful program. |

1988 IHC S2800 Tandem Dump Truck
With a fresh DT/A 466 and 13 sp Fuller trans, this truck rarely rests. Hauling around 12,000-15,000 tons of gravel each year, in addition to misc other hauling and Winter snow plowing with the attachable Falls 312 one way plow, it works just as hard in the off season. It is the hardest working truck around, and is relied on regularly to do all we need it for. |
1974 Ford F350 Spray Truck
Recently rebuilt and painted, the new version of this old reliable was then equipped with Raven chemical injection system with radar, monitor, and boomless nozzles for a variety of spraying needs. Used for noxious and R.O.W. weed control, chemical mowing and grass encroachment regulation, this truck has also become a valuable tool in our arsenal of machines. |

1996 Dodge D2500 4X4 Light Truck
The Dodge pickup is our heavy duty 4 wheeler for adverse conditions. A V8 360 engine and AT equipped standard cab unit, it can carry the entire crew to and from worksites, get through mud, snow and other adversities, and still do the bulk of errand running and official duties. |
1995 Form F150 4X2 Light Truck
The Ford is our economy pickup, equipped with a L6 300 engine and 5 speed trans, and serves as our grader support vehicle. It is equipped with a collapsable tow bar and carries a 175 gallon bulk tank for daily grader fueling when out on extended routes and for the mower during the mowing season. |

BCHD Highway Department Shop Building
This building, constructed in 1977, is the base of operations for our department. With two large heated bays, a large non-heated bay, a smaller firehall/utility bay and main office, our days begin and end here. The building is maintained well and is a valuable asset to our operation. |
Storage Building
Once the Old Highway Shop, this building still serves the needs of the County for storage of the 2955 tractor, light truck parking and sign and post supplies. |
|
|
Firehall and Supply Storage
The County utilizes the west half of the firehall for secure indoor storage of the spray truck during the Winter, the portable sprayer, our surplus equipment awaiting sale, and the grounds north of the building provide a location for a small stockpile of gravel, plow and culvert storage, and is a location used by the SDDOT for sand stockpiling for sander trucks to refill midroute. |
County Lots Misc.
These unimproved lots just north of town allow space for storing used culverts, oversize rock, various surplused items, as well as a location for surplus auction sale when needed. The site of the Original Highway Shop west of the service station is also owned and maintained by the County for storage or other needs. |
