Turning Scrap Iron Into A Valuable Asset
I was digging in our scrap iron pile one day and got the idea for the basic design. I hauled all the pieces, consisting of 3X6 bridge beam, some heavy tubing and various scrap pieces into the shop. Then I had to manufacture a set of PARALIFT style hooks and retainers. The used mower blades, which are a super-hardened T1 type of iron , proved useful for the engaging tool point. The end that has the 1 1/2" hole were doubled up and used for the pin mounts. A left over piece of 2"X12"x20" piece of plate steel was cut and fabricated as the main shank, and used grader blade was used in several reinforcement applications, providing extreme impact rigidity. The final product was then tested in the field with satisfactory results. The overall design and fabrication was done by me with a torch and an arc welder. Rod used was AC7018 exclusively and a salvaged rear view mirror was attached to provide visibility for the operator at the point of the bit from the operator's seat.
